A crystal chandelier in the bedroom?
Some people hesitate to put a crystal chandelier in the bedroom. Too feminine, too opulent or too unconventional, they fear.
To help settle arguments between spouses, and give interior designers a few talking points in favor of crystal, let us give you an historic perspective on the subject...
A husband should not imagine that crystal is strictly feminine. Louis XIV used crystal chandeliers in his decorating schemes to symbolize his absolute power. The White House is full of crystal chandeliers, and several presidents slept under one, as did Churchill when he visited.
Centuries ago monarchs conducted a lot of business from their bedrooms, which were often lighted by crystal chandeliers. Napoleon slept under a crystal chandelier, and although he was short, he did conquer the world, a manly enough achievement. “The bed has become a luxury for me,” said the Emperor. “I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world.”
And then there’s the fact that not all crystal chandeliers are created equal. No need to choose the showiest style for the bedroom. Schonbek, to give some examples, makes colored crystal chandeliers, tiny crystal chandeliers, rock crystal chandeliers and minimalist chandeliers that are only lightly ornamented with crystal. A man who collected minerals as a child might really enjoy a chandelier hung with natural rock crystal gemstones that are as ancient as the Earth.
Another compelling argument for a crystal chandelier anywhere and everywhere is its impact on the perceived value of your home. Most people find that a crystal chandelier is a good investment. Notice that it’s always mentioned in the real estate ads. It often enables the owner to ask for a higher price!
We always recommend that a dimmer switch be installed with a crystal chandelier. A dimly lit chandelier takes on a very romantic personality, especially appropriate for the bedroom.
