an exuberant new
cast chandelier by Schonbek
PLATTSBURGH, NY, JANUARY 16, 2008 – Eighteenth-century rococo artists would recognize a kindred spirit in Schonbek, with the introduction of a new cast chandelier called Milano. Schonbek presented the collection to the trade in Dallas this January.
Milano will begin appearing in lighting showrooms sometime in March.
"Every inch of this new chandelier," said President Andrew Schonbek, "is fabulously ornamental, from the intricate cast body and frame elements to the classic crystal pendants.
"The degeneration of cast chandeliers over the centuries is well known, and even museums have had a hard time finding good examples. Manufacturers all too often combine cast parts from different sources to save time and money, and the resulting cast chandelier is invariably a hodgepodge.
"We decided to revive this formidable historic style with complete integrity, which meant eschewing all ready-made castings and making our own. We worked with accomplished artisans in Italy to create new tooling for every cast part of Milano, from the complex center column to arms, scrolls and bobeches – and even down to joints and connectors.
"As a result every part of Milano is in tune with all its parts, the whole a model of harmony."
Faceted crystal drops by STRASS® Swarovski® Crystal in varying sizes are the predominant crystal trim of Milano. Their serene uniformity of shape has a calming effect on the liveliness of the castings. Every surface of the castings is etched and incised with leaf and flower motifs and tiny decorative patterns.
Milano comes in clear crystal as well as some very trendy colors: STRASS® Swarovski® Silver Shade and Golden Shadow. These pale, elusive colors exude mystery. They have a mirror-like quality reminiscent of the mirrored ornaments hung on some of the earliest crystal chandeliers.
