CRYSTAL CHANDELIERS GO TINY

PLATTSBURGH, NY –- Schonbek has introduced a new collection of crystal chandeliers in keeping with what CEO Andrew Schonbek calls the “trend to tiny.”

According to Andrew Schonbek, “A crystal chandelier used to be imposing by definition. The bigger it was, the better. And it had to be the focus of attention wherever it hung. All that has changed. People are still buying large crystal chandeliers, but they also want intimate crystal.”

Andrew Schonbek identifies several reasons for the trend to tiny. “Architects are building mansions for some clients, and cottages for others. Both groups are demanding tiny chandeliers.

“Take the two-story great room that’s a given for those with a wealth of square footage. A vast room is a challenge to furnish. With a tiny crystal chandelier, you can define a subspace within the grander space – an intimate conversational area, for example. And the crystal chandelier becomes an accent rather than the main event.

“Those with smaller homes want chandeliers designed for smaller rooms. Almost overnight it seems that everyone feels the need to possess crystal chandeliers. Conventional ceiling lighting is perceived as totally boring.

“At the same time, everyone is waking up to the fact that secondary spaces like bathrooms, hallways, landings, sewing rooms, work-out rooms and studies have been sadly overlooked as opportunities to have fun with decorating. Tiny crystal chandeliers have the power to transform such spaces into zones of pure delight.

“People have this growing desire to enjoy life to the full. In terms of the home, this means there are no more transitional spaces that one merely passes through. Even a walk-in closet is part of one’s life experience and ought to be beautiful in some small way. And it can be, with the addition of a tiny chandelier.

“Another interesting use for tiny chandeliers is in the kitchen. People are placing two or three of them over kitchen islands, making it a lot more fun to slave over a hot stove.”

Schonbek emphasized that, “with our teensy new chandeliers, nothing is lost by miniaturization. We have concentrated lovingly on the details, often adopting techniques from the jewelry trade to work with tiny crystals and creating the daintiest possible arms and scrolls to be in scale with elfin proportions.”

The new Schonbek collection of tiny crystal chandeliers offers a variety of looks – nostalgic, minimalist, mini-opulent, naturalistic, exotic and traditional. The crystal trim is just as varied, from richly colored crystal beads and droplets to ancient rock crystal to traditional handcut pendeloques amazingly petite.
