Schonbek Research Highlights Interior Design Trends
Here at Schonbek we are in daily contact by phone and email with homeowners in search of the right crystal chandelier. Here are some trends we see emerging from our observations:
The triumph of architecture
Today’s homeowners and designers are fascinated by architectural detail. Moldings matter. Domes dominate, often painted with trompe l’oeil art. In ornate architectural environments, a dramatic crystal chandelier is de rigueur.
Crystal in the bath
Bathroom lighting is going upscale. The more impressive the owner’s career, the more magnificent the bathroom must be to diffuse stress. Interior designers are favoring a crystal chandelier or two over the tub, and a smaller one in the commode.
Two-chandelier dining rooms
Dinners are becoming grander, tables longer. A banquet-length table is often best lighted by two smaller crystal chandeliers, rather than one large one. Oversized dining rooms also invite the use of matching crystal wall sconces and candelabra.
Growing up with crystal
Many a nursery now contains a Schonbek crystal chandelier. Cribs are carefully positioned to let baby contemplate the play of light.
Cooking with crystal
America’s obsession with eating well has glorified the kitchen. Industrial-strength stoves and crystal chandeliers over the kitchen island all help signal the presence of haute cuisine. Even homeowners who hardly ever cook covet the look. This new fascination with the kitchen often results in a crystal chandelier over the kitchen island or breakfast table.
Manifold chandeliers
We are seeing many homes with multiple chandeliers, even multiple chandeliers within one room. Some people are purists and keep to the same chandelier design throughout the home. Others pick a different design for every room. This is possible because the crystal chandelier comes in many different looks these days.
High-tech crystal
This is a trend we are consciously creating, right now, with our high-tech lighting collection called Geometrix®. We saw in our consumer researches that homeowners who favor minimalist décor had no very compelling choices in the category of contemporary lighting. So we created this edgy collection. Interestingly enough, the designs also work in eclectic rooms.
Decorating as a way of life
The owner of a crystal chandelier has no one “profile.” Some have traveled the world and rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous. Some are small-town folk with modest ambitions. But all love their homes with a passion. Many devote a year or two creating a perfect home environment for themselves. Others make the creation of a beautiful home a lifetime project, indulging their love of interior design one room at a time.
