Schonbek was asked to create crystal chandeliers for the renowned Amsterdam Concert Hall.
The Amsterdam Concertgebouw is often called the most acoustically perfect concert hall in the world. Acclaimed musicians, soloists and conductors feel fortunate to perform there.
Merkx + Girod Architects were given the challenge of updating the functionality and restoring the faded glory of this 1888 structure, while preserving the legendary acoustics.
They in turn asked Schonbek to create crystal chandeliers in keeping with the Viennese classicism of the building design.
For the main stairwell, they wanted chandeliers that were suitably magnificent, but would also safely light the stairs. The specs included directional spotlights integrated into the framework of each crystal chandelier.
The balcony foyer required crystal fit for the Queen. This is a refreshment area for visitors, except when the Queen of Holland is present. Then it becomes a private space for royal use.
The design of the Schonbek chandeliers was inspired by seventeenth-century chandeliers in the court of Louis XIV.
In the eclectic spirit of the renovation, the architects specified refinements to the original design: extra-thick cladding of the arms, simplified bobeches, and rigid stems rather than chains to suspend the chandeliers.
The chandeliers were also customized to display a thick-cut, antique style of crystal. Schonbek was asked to match the crystal on the chandeliers lighting the Recital Hall. Which we did.
“What we like about working with Schonbek,” said Evelyne Merkx of Merkx + Girod, “is their flexibility. They will make a chandelier that is truly our own, with exactly the characteristics we need for our project.”
Paul Van der Lee, head of the technical department for the Concertgebouw, commended the workmanship of the Schonbek chandeliers: “They are really well made. Fittings are in the correct positions and slide together well. The instructions are easy to follow. And everything arrived as discussed, in size and weight.”
Van der Lee had no difficulties working with Schonbek across time zones: “It’s easy to talk to Schonbek. They’re responsive, well organized, and they know about international business and transport. There are no surprises.”
