UPSCALE CAFÉ? JUST ADD CRYSTAL.
New Moon in Burlington, Vermont is no ordinary café. The espresso is pure Italia; the lighting, a massive Schonbek chandelier.
The chandelier design, called Genesis, is inspired by the Tree of Life. Cabochons of colored crystal hang like ripe fruit on the foliate framework. Antiqued candles rest upon solid rock crystal bobeches. And a massive sphere of rock crystal ornaments the finial point.
The startling originality of the crystal chandelier is in keeping with the authenticity of the espresso and the creativity of the designer salads.
Neither traditional nor contemporary, Genesis is in a design category all its own. This made it an ideal choice to go with the café's eclectic furnishings of recycled barn board, as well as the purely functional technical lighting in the service areas.
MAGNIFYING MAGNIFICENCE
Genesis, as catalogued, was not big enough to dominate the interior of New Moon. The café opens onto the street in warm weather, and the decor had the potential of acting as a magnet for passersby, with the help of a truly magnificent chandelier.
And so Schonbek custom-designed a giant Genesis for New Moon that was 48 inches in diameter and 60 inches long, with 44 candles. The scale of this chandelier works perfectly with the oversized fireplace and large leather sofas.
Matching Genesis sconces enliven the walls, and a tiny Genesis brightens a dark corner in the back.
