17 Schonbek crystal chandeliers were chosen to light an extraordinary exhibit called Nicholas & Alexandra: At Home with the Last Tsar and His Family at The Newark Museum in New Jersey.

Unique in America, this exhibit was an event of international importance as well. It ran September 29 through January 9, 2005.

Visitors entered the private world of Russia’s last imperial family, the Romanovs – and discovered hundreds of treasures never before seen outside Russia.

Special arrangements were made so that after the exhibit, the chandeliers could be purchased at a local lighting showroom, with 20 percent of the proceeds to benefit the Museum.

“This project,” said Paul Greselin, head of Schonbek’s contract division, “was one of a kind. It illustrates our readiness to adapt to the needs of the project, no matter how unusual, and to work in high-profile environments.”

OPULENCE AS A WAY OF LIFE
Life for a Russian tsar was lived before the eyes of a court steeped in protocol, and conducted in vast chambers lighted by crystal chandeliers.

Russian aristocrats loved Paris and Baden, frequented the elite salons of every fashionable European capital and were avid collectors of European art.

The Schonbek crystal chandeliers in The Newark Museum exhibit reflected both the opulence and the deeply cosmopolitan tastes of the imperial court.

FROM PLAYFUL TO MAGNIFICENT
Because of the breadth of the Schonbek design portfolio, with styles spanning five centuries, the Museum was able to choose a wide variety of chandeliers to complement different rooms.

Rococo crystal chandeliers of palatial proportions adorned the ballroom and court of the Museum.

Nostalgic pink crystal chandeliers graced the children’s gallery.

A whimsical crystal chandelier festooned with jewelry chains hung above a Marie Antoinette family portrait.

Glowing press coverage of the exhibit often took note of the Schonbek crystal chandeliers.

ON TIME FOR A GALA OPENING
Schonbek fulfilled not only the aesthetic requirements of the project, but also the need for on-time delivery. The crystal chandeliers were in place for the VIP reception marking the opening of the exhibit.
