Are there any surprises left in Las Vegas? Head off the strip to the new Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa in Summerlin. Feast your eyes on a marvel of desert architecture. And prepare yourself for an astounding display of crystal lighting by Schonbek, in extreme geometric forms.
“The unexpected is what excites people,” said Albie Colotto, Director of Design at Friedmutter Group, the architectural and design firm responsible for the Red Rock Resort project.
In the casino, huge Schonbek crystal spheres embraced by hundreds of gleaming filaments float above the players. Dramatizing the High Limit games is a massive Schonbek crystal box 60 feet long that was clearly designed outside the box, and a glittering array of crystal cylinders.
“Seeing these chandeliers,” said Colotto, “is like walking in the desert and suddenly encountering a shimmering pond.”
TWO ARTISTS COLLABORATING
“Schonbek helped us realize the vision of the owners of this unique property,” said Brad Friedmutter, founder and CEO of Friedmutter Group. “The working relationship with Schonbek was great, like one sculptor meeting another, like two artists collaborating. Our team even visited the Schonbek factory to explore design options.
“We wanted the crystal spheres to have texture. Working with Schonbek we came up with a methodical striped pattern for the crystal that gave us the texture we were looking for, and also generated a unique spectral brilliance.”
Colotto called the Schonbek factory “incredible. We were very impressed.”
Kara Siffermann, Interior Design Manager of Station Casinos, parent company of Red Rock Casino, commented on the comfort factor of working with Schonbek. “They are professional engineers as well as designers. We work with concepts, but we need something that functions. Schonbek spent a lot of time engineering our pieces, making these heavy structures appear to float.”
The Schonbek chandeliers were also engineered for easy maintenance. Clients don’t always think of this, but Schonbek does, as a matter of course.
EXOTIC WOODS, RARE MARBLE AND STRASS® CRYSTAL
No corners were cut in the design and construction of Red Rock Casino. Rooms are rich in sensuous Macassar ebony wood, cinnamon rosewood and rare varieties of marble. The chandeliers are entirely composed of Strass® crystal.
In harmony with the high standards of the project, Schonbek’s focus on quality was evident, said Colotto, “from the unique crystal connections all the way to the seamless installation.”
Every Schonbek chandelier and pendant was delivered on time.
“PEOPLE STOP AND STARE”
The spa and resort facilities of Red Rock Casino, and nearby Red Rock National Park, draw a wide range of visitors.
“But even people who aren’t here for the gaming,” said Friedmutter, “stop and stare at the crystal.”
