Clouds drift, stars twinkle, leaves rustle, rainbows form and fade as you watch. There is so much movement in Nature. Yet when we go indoors, everything becomes static.

A crystal chandelier relieves this unnatural situation. The breaking up of light among the crystals fills the room with subtle spectral effects and brings everything to life.

Intriguing things happen to color, too, when you have a crystal chandelier. It refracts and reflects the colors that surround it. It becomes an integral and energetic part of the room.

If you really want your crystal chandelier to pick up the colors of the room in an extravagant way, you might consider an all crystal chandelier. Every part of the design is crystal, including the arms and body. Olde World is a magnificent example of this style. This crystal chandelier deserves a blog all its own.

Buckingham is a rock crystal chandelier that really speaks to men. My husband is always suggesting we get one. This is out of the question, because Buckingham is designed on a monumental scale, and there’s no room in our house that would accommodate it.

But those who do happen to live like royalty certainly ought to consider Buckingham. (I would if I did.) It’s a glorious crystal chandelier.

The style dates back to eighteenth-century Spain. The ornate body supports an amazing display of authentic rock crystal gemstones. There are huge rock crystal drops and diamonds and massive bobeches of solid rock crystal. An enormous rock crystal ball hovers like a particularly bright full moon at the finial point.

The arms and scrolls of this chandelier undulate expansively and are dramatically outlined by crystal beads.

So Buckingham falls into several rarefied categories: rock crystal chandelier, beaded crystal chandelier, historic crystal chandelier.

Because the rock crystal pendants are oversized, you can see clearly the internal complexity of the quartz. There’s a record of the cataclysmic history of the planet in every chunk of rock crystal. Veins and fissures tell the tale of the terrific temperatures and tremendous pressures that manifested during the formation of Earth.

If you were in the presence of a Buckingham crystal chandelier, and you reached over and cupped the highly polished finial sphere in your hand, you would feel an eerie coolness. This is characteristic of rock crystal. No wonder rock crystal has been an object of desire among collectors since ancient times. You look into its depths, you touch its cool surface, and you feel like a philosopher pondering the mysteries of the universe.

“If you could have only one crystal chandelier on a desert island,” my husband said to me the other night, “what would it be?”

He said he’d take La Scala, not waiting for my answer. He has a wonderful ability to make quick decisions about almost anything.

La Scala is a crystal chandelier with every chandelier virtue. It’s richly dressed with crystal in classic shapes. The prismatic brilliance of the light dancing off all the pendants is dazzling. We keep our chandelier dimmed way down for subtlety. At low wattage, the fiery effects are just as remarkable, yet mysteriously liquid. La Scala probably is the chandelier I should take.

On the other hand, there isn’t much color on a desert island, so perhaps a Mardi Gras crystal chandelier in the brightest possible colors would be a smart choice.

Then again, perhaps a rock crystal chandelier would be the thing. I would never tire of contemplating the mysterious markings inside this ancient quartz.

Frankly, I don’t like questions of this sort. I can’t commit myself to an existence with only one novel, one concerto, one painting, one crystal chandelier – whatever the object of desire I must choose.

I’d rather just find myself on the island with the crystal chandelier already in place, hanging from the one lone palm tree. Let it be a surprise. (As long as it’s a Schonbek.)

I ran into my friend Patty on the street the other day, and she reminded me sternly that the days are getting shorter. She said I’d better hurry and take advantage of these wonderful sunny days.

I said, “What about the moon? Isn’t that just as wonderful?” I might have continued, “And what about crystal chandeliers? They come into their own, after all, on long dark evenings.”

People who suffer from sun deprivation in winter might do well to examine their lighting. A crystal chandelier is mood-elevating, not just because it’s beautiful, but because of the way it plays with light.

The brilliance of crystal comes from the refraction of light passing through a prism. The same thing is going on when a rainbow forms in the sky. So you’re living in a very lively, almost magical atmosphere, when you share a room with a crystal chandelier.

The owner of a crystal chandelier quickly comes to welcome nightfall. This is your moment. You can switch on your Schonbek and revel in the fiery effects of light dancing off crystal.

I have a friend who bought a rental property, a beautiful old house she felt sure would attract upscale tenants. But just to make doubly sure, she did extensive renovations and put a Schonbek crystal chandelier or two in every apartment.

She even put a Schonbek crystal wall sconce in the stairwell.

Whenever she runs a for-rent ad, she naturally mentions the crystal chandeliers. She gets an excellent return on her investment. Her tenants are in fact upscale, they love their apartments, and she never has a vacancy for long.

My friend has a lot of affection for the crystal chandeliers in her rental units. She selected them with great care. She puts in the leases that she’s the only one allowed to clean the chandeliers, and that she’ll enter the apartment every nine months for that purpose. She really enjoys that annual reunion with her Schonbek crystal chandeliers.

Actually, I’m the one who showed her how to clean a crystal chandelier. It’s easy, and in my opinion, fun. I’ll talk more about that one day.

Landlords with nice properties might seriously consider what a crystal chandelier or two would do for them!
